The IWLA Endowment and its RELIANCE FOR COMPLIANCE CAMPAIGN
|
At this past summer's National Convention the IWLA Endowment unveiled a campaign to bring the
Endowment into full compliance with Internal Revenue Service requirements. This campaign has been
christened the RELIANCE FOR COMPLAINCE CAMPAIGN, signifying that the Endowment is relying on its
members in order to comply with IRS guidelines.
It should also be noted that when you join the Izaak Walton League of America you automatically become a
member of the IWLA Endowment.
Since the Endowment has been granted tax exempt 501(c)(3) status, the organization is required to follow
certain guidelines in order to keep that privileged designation. One of the guidelines requires one-third of
the members of the Endowment to support it financially on an annual basis. Since the Endowment receives
no percentage of IWLA national dues, it must rely on donations from chapters and individual members to
sustain its growth and to comply with IRS rules for tax exempt non-profit designation.
It would be difficult, at best, to expect 15,000 members of an organization with 45,000 members to send
individual checks to support the organization. However, that goal appears much easier if Chapters,
representing one-third of national membership, vote to send $1.00 (one dollar) per chapter member to
the Endowment in support of the Endowment's programs. This has been the thesis for the RELIANCE FOR
COMPLIANCE CAMPAIGN.
Thus far this fiscal year, which runs from May 1, 2008 - April 30, 2009, the Endowment has received a total
of $14,985 from an aggregate of 17,945 members. If you chapter has not already contributed to the
campaign we would encourage you to do so. Donations may be sent to Shirley Freeman, Executive
Secretary, IWLA Endowment, 106 Maple Cir, Waverly, IA 50677. With the support of our league chapters
the Endowment will not only be in full compliance with the IRS but will increase its assets and thus be able
to offer greater financial assistance to league Chapters, Divisions and the National organization thru its
competitive grant program.

Endowment Board Director
Director visits are very important for your Chapter. Communication then improves between Chapters, the
State Division and National.
That being said, I suggest if your Director has not called you recently to schedule a visit, you make the
call. Make sure you save some time on your agenda to allow for information sharing and questions.
Some of the things you may want to ask about are:
- Loan opportunities
- Free website for your chapter
- New membership brochures from National that can be easily modified for your chapter
- Youth activity information, both what you are doing and what others are doing (Don’t forget you can
also check with our Youth Committee Chair, Brenda Smith).
Also, the State Division has a memorial fund that uses donations to plant trees. Ask your Director how you
or your chapter can donate to or make use of this fund.
Talk with your Director about an opportunity to host a State Convention. We are currently looking for a
site for 2010 and forward.
As an opportunity for the State Board to visit your Chapter, we would also welcome you to host a State
Board meeting. Speak with your Director if this interests you.
Your Director will also be recruiting new directors. Ask more about this position and see if your Chapter
has a likely candidate.
If you have never attended a National or State convention, ask your Director how you and your chapter
can benefit from attending.
